Week of June 16

We only have one more week of spelling, weekend webs, and book reports! Horray! We survived all that homework, and are ready to take on more challenges for Grade 2!

Feedback is welcome for any of these activites. Did your child enjoy a particular one? Did your child not like a particular one? Or did you child really enjoy having work to do? Feedback is welcome through email, or in the comment section of the post on the blog!

Children's Museum

Sorry for the delay!

I've been having a few busy days with playing catch up. With being sick with some gross nasty cold, assessment time and the lovely beautiful summer days, it's been piling up like dirty dishes. Anyways, our grade 1 class along with the kindergarten class had a wonderful and lovely day at the Children's Museum on May 23!

We had a workshop on needs and wants, as well as building a habitat. The kids sure had lots of fun! (Last two pictures: courtesy of Mrs. Sachdev!)

Water Pot Project

Self-watering Pot

Materials:
You will need 2 liter bottle, thick string or yarn (either cotton or poly seems to work), a screwdriver, hammer, and a sharp blade to cut the bottle.
Cut the bottle in half

Use a screwdriver and a hammer to punch a hole in the center of the bottle cap

Cut a length of yarn/string about 1'-1.5' long, double it over and tie a loop on one end.

Thread the yarn/string through the hole in the bottle cap so that the knot is on the inside of the cap. This will act as a wick, drawing water up from the basin below and into the soil. The plant will take only what it needs, so the soil moisture will be perfectly regulated.

Put the cap back on the bottle top and nest the top of the bottle in the base. As the plants grow and use up the water, you can just lift off the top to add more to the base instead of pouring it over the soil. As the soil dries, water will be sucked up through the string into the pot.

Please label your bottle with your name and bring it to class for May 26. We will plant the seed and put soil in when your bottle when it arrives to school!

Book Report

I apologize for the late send out for book reports. I was away yesterday. I have given an extra day to complete the assignment for next week. We are working on 'Non-Conventional Book Report #1'. The story that your child chooses should not be the same book they have read for the 'Conventional Book Report #1'.

If your child does not have any words that are new to them, then they simply just have to colour the crayon box, fill in the story and the author. I decided not to tell them in person because I knew most of them would say they didn't have any new words. I guess sometimes we just have to go behind them!! hehe

St. Patrick's Day

On St. Patrick's Day, the leprechaun came to visit our classroom. He left us a disastrous mess for us to clean, and some clues along the path. He left us some treats along the hunt, and a pot of gold for us.

Sneaky leprechaun...

Mr. Green dressed in green found the pot of gold!

I apologize for the extra late posts lately. So much has happened at school and my personal life. I've been away for a week due to lung infection and have been busy planning away for my wedding! So you can almost imagine how much time I have after work.

Nevertheless, we celebrated 100th day on February 12. The kids had so much fun in their pajamas working on different centers. Take a look!

Daily 5

We have been starting a new program called Daily 5 since the beginning of January. We have been having so much fun in learning about reading and the kinds of books available to read. There are essentially 5 stations to work at when doing the Daily 5. There is: 1) Read to Self, 2) Read to Someone, 3) Work on Writing, 4) Word Work, 5) Listening. We will be doing the first 4 stations, but I am tweeking the fifth station a little bit. Insted of Listening to books, we will have one student at the iPad station. This station, students will be working on sight words, listening or word games.

Our focus is to work on Daily 5 every Wednesday and Thursday. So far, we've practiced Read to Self and Read to Someone. Take a look at our busy readers!

Animal Study

We have decided on our winter animal study through a vote. The winner is.... penguin study!

We used a KWL chart to show what we Know, Wonder, and Learned

These are the responses from the students about what they Know already:

Madison K.- They waddle
Manjit- They do no fly. They're fast swimmers
Brody- They're birsd and can't fly. They walk with their babies
Madison L.- They slide on their bellies on snow
Talati- They jump from the water
Grayson- They dive out of water
Evey- They live in the arctic. Most of them are fat
Noah G.-They swim. They're birds that swim
Taylor- They have beaks and wings
Noah F.- They slip and slide
Tyson- They eat fish
Abriella- They like to flop around
Alexa- They lay eggs
Timothy- They walk slowly
Zara- They can't be in the hot weather

These are the questions about what the Wonder about:
Evey- What time does the egg hatches?
Noah G. - When do they get their babies?
Timothy- When do they lay their eggs?
Alexa- Why are they so fat?
Tyson- Why they swim so fast?
Zara- Why are they called penguins?
Sahib- Why do they run so fast?
Taylor - How old do they get?
Madison L.- Why do they have to stay away from the sun?
Manjit- Where does the egg come out?
Brody- If they live in an igloo?
Taylor- Do they have different colours besides black and white?

We will be looking through different mediums to learn about our wonders. It's going to a slippery fun ride!
